The GrowSafe technology allows us to accurately measure daily intake per animal in a group feeding situation. The cattle are fitted with electronic identification tags. When the calf approaches a feed bunk, the computer records which calf is at the feeder, when he approached the feeder, how long he stayed, and how much feed he consumed. We can then assess the indiviual calf's efficiency of feed conversion. The Colby Community College Beef Program acquired the GrowSafe unit through a grant funded by the National Science Foundation.

Here is an example of how efficiency can impact your bottom line...
BJL RPH Kip 130X - 2012 TOP EFFICIENCY BULL!
Test Dry Matter Intake = 24.2 lbs/d
PEN Average Dry Matter Intake = 30.6 lbs/d
DIFFERENCE = 6.4 lbs/d
448 lbs LESS total dry feed
As feed and pasture costs rise, raising efficient cattle becomes more critical. Heritability of efficiency selection averages 35%. Therefore, utilizing feed efficiency as a selection tool may help improve the overall efficiency of your herd.
Savings can come with increasing stocking rates without compromising your grass, or fewer days on feed in the feedyard.
